Pedestrian Safety a Major Concern in New Jersey

Pedestrian traffic always increases during the summer months. With an increase in the amount of people out walking, there is a greater potential for serious pedestrian accidents.  Many law enforcement agencies throughout the state are conducting campaigns aimed at increasing awareness for both motorists and pedestrians.

Police officers in Union Township are posing as normal pedestrians trying to safely cross busy streets at crosswalks. If motorists refuse to stop, they will be stopped and ticketed. Union Township has seen 268 pedestrian accidents in the last five years. Of these incidents, 10 resulted in deaths.

This problem isn't unique to Union Township, of course. The New Jersey legislature amended a state law in 2010 that required motorists to yield to pedestrians. Today, motorists must actually stop and remain stopped until pedestrians clear a crosswalk. Pedestrians crossing at intersections with traffic lights will have the right of way if they have a green light. Motorists will need to yield to pedestrians crossing with a green light. Drivers and pedestrians could be fined for not following the rules now in place.

While police focus on enforcing these laws, motorists and pedestrians can take proactive steps toward reducing the number of pedestrian accidents that occur. Pedestrians will want to pay close attention to any approaching vehicles. Before stepping into a lane of traffic, make eye contact with drivers to ensure that they see you. Also, be sure to cross at designated areas, and give drivers a sufficient distance to safely stop.

Motorists need to be alert when in high-traffic pedestrian areas. Not all pedestrians are familiar with the rules, and may attempt to cross streets in unmarked areas. This may require a driver to stop quickly, which will be extremely difficult if not prepared.

Any collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian is almost always going to result in serious injury for the pedestrian. If you or someone you know has been injured in one of these accidents, contact an experienced personal injury attorney in your area to understand your options.
