Protect Yourself From Danger of Deadly Medical Errors

If you're in the hospital - whether you've planned the stay for weeks or you were rushed to the emergency room - you may be feeling overwhelmed. Taking a few simple steps, however, can increase not only your confidence but also your chances of a favorable outcome.

Types of Medical Errors

Preventable medical errors typically occur because doctors, nurses and other medical care professionals failed to adhere to proper procedure. This may mean that a nurse did not double-check a dosage of medication before administering it; a doctor did not confirm a patient's identity before operating; or that a medical care provider simply did not wash his hands before performing a procedure.

Medical errors, and their aftermath, that can occur in hospitals include:

An Institute of Medicine report estimates that 98,000 people die each year in the United States due to preventable medical errors. A recent Society of Actuaries study says that medical errors cost our economy $19.5 billion. While these statistics are shocking, it is important to know that hospital patients can take specific steps to protect themselves against medical malpractice.

How to Help Prevent Medical Errors

Patients in hospitals are not powerless. Medical errors, including hospital-acquired infections, can be avoided in some situations.

As a patient, you should:

  • Bring an advocate with you: Also known as a "health buddy," this family member or friend can take notes, ask questions and speak up for you when you aren't able. Being in the hospital is a difficult time, and this, combined with the effects of any medication, could make your advocate an invaluable ally.
  • Ask questions: This advice applies to almost every portion of your hospital stay. Ask about the reasons for tests that have been ordered; the results of the tests; medication types and dosages; the name and contact information of the doctor in charge of your care; whether health care professionals have washed their hands; instructions upon discharge; and anything else that concerns you. If you don't understand the answer, ask to have it explained.
  • Be informed about your history: Bring your medical records with you if you can. Include information about procedures you have undergone; allergies you have; medications you take; and emergency contact information.
  • Be choosy: If you are able, choose a hospital that performs many of the type of medical procedure that you must undergo. Health care providers get better with experience, just like everyone else.

These fairly straightforward points could end up saving your life. Even when it is not easy, stick to your plan and get all the information you need. Rely on your health care advocate when you can use a hand.

Finally, if you or a loved one has experienced a serious injury due to medical malpractice, speak with an attorney who can help you determine your next steps.
