What is Cerebral Palsy?
In most cases, the onset of cerebral palsy (CP) occurs before or during the child's birth. Although it isn't always immediately recognizable, symptoms are often evident during the first year or before the child reaches age five, as motor skills and muscle movement become evident. In most cases, the person is prevented from moving limbs in a coordinated and purposeful way. CP can also result in problems with slurred speech, blurred vision and cognitive abilities. The three types of cerebral palsy are spastic cerebral palsy, causing stiffness and difficulties in movement; athetoid CP, leading to involuntary movements; and ataxic CP, causing a disturbed sense of depth perception and balance.
