What Is Erb's Palsy? It Is Also Known as Brachial Plexus Paralysis
During the birth process, the baby's shoulder may become wedged in the mother's pubic bone, resulting in shoulder dystocia. The resulting nerve damage is known medically as brachial plexus paralysis, commonly referred to as Erb's palsy. Symptoms include loss of feeling and movement in the shoulder, arms and hands. In its severe state, the injury can mean a lifetime of medical treatment, rehabilitation and loss of mobility.
Not all cases of Erb's palsy are the result of medical negligence on the part of the attending doctor during delivery. The condition is most prevalent in children of high birth weight and size. In many cases, brachial plexus injuries can be prevented by proper preparation for the birth of a large infant. The doctors and attending delivery room medical staff are expected to anticipate problems and react to conditions that may lead to shoulder dystocia. Failing to prevent possible problems means that the hospital and doctor may not have met the expected standard of care and medical negligence may be present.
