Natural birth doesn't always go without complications in the delivery room. Babies of high birth weight or in the breech position are often unable to present normally through the birth canal. In such cases, a doctor may require the use of forceps and other instruments to facilitate the birth. Forceps should only be used when the baby is in fetal distress and the mother is having a great deal of difficulty pushing. A degree of force is necessary to turn and pull the baby through the canal. Forceps in the hands of an unskilled or negligent doctor can inflict serious, lifelong injuries on the infant, particularly in the area of the head, neck and spine. The most severe risks include nerve damage in the facial area, cerebral palsy, and shoulder dystocia.
