RECENT SETTLEMENTS AND VERDICTS:
The New Jersey Supreme Court confirmed a recovery of $199,000.00 for a client injured when she fell on defective stairs. The defense appealed to the Appellate Division which affirmed the recovery and the New Jersey Supreme Court also affirmed the recovery. While the appeals were pending, interest was accruing and the client received a final recovery of $248,000.00. Joseph Albano handled the appeals on behalf of the Firm in both the Appellate Division and the New Jersey Supreme Court.
The Bergen County Superior Court approved a $100,000 settlement for a young bicyclist who was injured when struck by an automobile. This settlement and Court proceeding was handled by Jonas K. Seigel.
Gregory J. Tierney obtained a settlement of $550,000 in an auto accident where a tree fell on the client's car. The firm hired an expert to prove that the property owner should have periodically inspected the property and noted the rotten tree as a potential danger.
A Bergen County Jury recently found 100% liability on the defendant in an intersection accident. The plaintiff received a Judgment of $30,000. The case was presented by Jonas K. Seigel.
Gregory Tierney obtained a settlement of $200,000 on behalf of a client injured in an auto accident. Not until a jury was called to the Bergen County Courtroom did the insurance company offer the money.
Joseph Albano also obtained a $200,000 settlement on behalf of a client whose car was hit head on by a vehicle making a left-hand turn in front of it. The settlement took place at the Passaic County Courthouse.
PRO BONO:
Jonas Seigel has been very active in Pro Bono matters on behalf of the New Jersey State Bar Association Young Lawyers Division. On April 17, 2010, he was chairman of the Earth Day committee and organized a tree planting in Newark. Over two dozen young lawyers attended and twenty-five trees were planted. He has also attended three "Wills for Heroes" events which were held on Saturdays in 2010 throughout New Jersey. The program is designed to provide free wills and counselling for first responders such as police, fire and emergency workers and their spouses.
The Seigel Charity Firm named the Boys and Girls Club of Lodi and Hackensack as the first recipient of its charitable donation. The Firm is contributing $15,000.00 to the Boys and Girls Club to enable the club to purchase a multi-passenger van to transport children from Hackensack to the Lodi facility.
In the past year, Jonas Seigel, a trustee of the Paterson Habitat for Humanity has volunteered for a number of building projects. He is presently organizing a firm building project. We would ask any clients who would like to volunteer on a Saturday to please contact him.
Jonas K. Seigel volunteered with the Young Lawyers Division of the New Jersey State Bar Association on June 7, 2009 participating in the Wills for Heroes program. This project provided first responders such as police, fire and emergency workers and their spouses with free wills.
Jan K. Seigel spoke to New Jersey attorneys on behalf of the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education at the Law Center at Rutgers University on June 14, 2009. Mr. Seigels talk was on How to Build a Law Practice. He originated the lecture in 1980 and this year marks his 30th anniversary in presenting the course.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITION:
Jan and Jonas Seigel have been named the 2010 recipients of the Paul Patti Humanitarian Award by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Lodi and Hackensack for their recent donation of $15,000.00 to enable the club to purchase a van to transport children f row Hackensack to the Lodi facility.
For his work in food banks, soup kitchens, and Habitat for Humanity, as well as forming the Seigel Law Firm Charity Fund, Jonas K. Seigel was recognized by the New Jersey State Bar Association at its annual meeting and presented the Community Service Award. SEIGEL LAW FIRM CHARITY FUND ESTABLISHED:
Seigel Law Firm has recently initiated the Seigel Law Firm Charity Fund. The firm will make a donation from each case it resolves to the Charity Fund. At the end of each calendar year the firm will choose a local charity to be the beneficiary of its yearly donation. The firm is always willing to review local charity suggestion from its clients.

The Seigels have always enjoyed athletics and learned their competitive spirit on the playing field. Jan K. Seigel is a member of the Georgetown Prep Sports Hall of Fame and Jonas K. Seigel played lacrosse at Don Bosco High School and Goucher College where he was a two-year captain of the team. He has also coached lacrosse at Ramapo High School.
